The manufacturing sector has been vital for the European industry, and an important driver for the economic growth, employment, and innovation. Although in the ‘90s the manufactured products from Europe accounted for one-third of the world total, current EU’s contribution by manufacturing sector is falling almost to half of that, but manufacturing still accounts for two-thirds of total R&D, provides half of productivity growth and represent more than 60% of exports and imports . Manufacturing industry is the backbone of the EU economy, bringing prosperity and employment to citizens in all EU regions.

This industry is currently going through an exceptional transformation process, driven by several factors (from EFFRA R&D challenges and priorities, https://www.effra.eu/made-in-europe-state-play):

Digitalization, and its relation with needed training and education, is one core challenge for EU industry. The existence of new approaches to manufacturing training programmes are core for a skilled workforce. VET and other life-long learning offer are lacking the digital view: unified digital resources, and new blended learning courses supporting previous only face-to-face trainings. DITMET project aims to improve manufacturing learning, in particular Risk Prevention courses, generating digital capabilities on the methodology (through e-learning, gamification and augmented reality experiences) for educators and trainees. This will support and help the transformation of manufacturing training in this current COVID-19 situation.

In particular, DITMET will focus on composites manufacturing, a key area with application in different sectors: building, automotive, transport, electronics, leisure, wind energy, etc. Carbon fiber composite materials have been increasingly substituting metal components from growing concerns regarding fuel consumption and CO2 emission levels. Germany is the largest EU country in the GRP/composites market with a total production volume of 225,000 tonnes. Despite the drop during the economic and financial crisis, Italy, Spain and Portugal keep an important level of production volume of nearly 160,000 tonnes stabilised since 2012. Market growth in Eastern European countries has been remarkable in recent years, reaching a production volume of 217,000 tonnes (Witten & Mathes 2019).

There is a lack of specific training centers for composites manufacturing, although some examples have recently appeared. CETMAR manages A Aixola, a reference center in Spain in this sector, focused on resin transfer mould manufacturing. Within A Aixola courses, Risk Prevention is critical for a high-quality and effective training that guarantee security at the factory-environment that presents different risks due chemicals, machinery, working loads, etc. which must be known and considered for a safe workplace. Nowadays, all training must accomplish with COVID-19 good practices, which will be incorporated to the Risk Prevention training.

The aim of the DITMEP is to develop these blended courses for Risk Prevention with digital capabilities, in a transnational format solution for an innovative and reinforced education on composites manufacturing, which can be easily replicated at other sectors. We will address an e-learning platform, through training contents gamification, and complete it with AR experiences through a mobile app. The practical view of these courses are critical; for accomplishing this, DITMEP proposes to embed interactive techniques such as gamification and AR to deliver learning experiences that are close to in-person workshop traditional training.

Deployment of a common gamification methodology for Risk Prevention training modules
AR mobile application development to support 2 series of learning experiences proposed as part of the core training (virtual spaces signalisation and emergency drills).
To reinforce learners and teachers with digital capabilities: guides on how to use the materials, how to complement in-presence teaching and to develop on-line trainings. A common structure in English will translated by the regional partners.
Tools and methodology evaluation through pilot training implementations (3 countries) with included tests for evaluation the procedures from the teachers/learners.

At the end of the project, the main results will be:

To improve digital capabilities of learners and teachers in Risk prevention courses for manufacturing training, through a blended learning approach
A training program and deployment in an e-learning platform specifically for Risk prevention courses based on gamification with resources for theoretical part and gamification activities, specific evaluation procedures , reinforced with Augmented Reality experiences through an app for individual use in mobile devices
A methodology tested in 3 EU countries through pilot trainings, with evaluation from inputs of the learners/trainers
Guide for trainers and learners on use of the interactive digital learning resources

All these materials will be tested delivered in an e-learning platform Moodle-based (from partner ISQ Moodle) and will be translated into the partners’ regional languages for deployment of the pilot trainings. Finally, the training materials will be replicated at national platforms for ensuring sustainability after the projects’ end.

The other tasks are dissemination work and the implementation of pilot tests to test the developments of the project. We are also involved in the development due to our experience in safety trainings and manufacturing trainings.
