Lightning Protection Maintenance

The module provides an overview of the different types of lightning protection systems installed in wind turbines, their set-ups and functional principles. Participants are trained to perform maintenance and trouble-shooting of these systems and document maintenance work.

Knowledge

Explain the elctrical phenomena and conditions that cause lightning strikes
Name the key legal stipulations and technical rules relating to lightning protection systems
Describe the design, functions and protective gear of lightning protection systems
Differentiate classes of protection (main, medium, fine)
Describe the functional principles of overvoltage protective devices
Identify damage through lightning

Skills

Demonstrate how to de-energize the turbine
Perform visual inspection and maintenance of lightning protection systems according to operating and service manuals and document maintenance work
Identify and document lightning damage
Replace damaged components
Commission lightning protection systems

Prerequisites

Vocational training in mechanics or electrical engineering, Electrically skilled person for specified assembly assignments, Basic knowledge of wind energy plant technology
