This module is designed to give the candidate an overview of the principals of offshore foundation design and the work that is required prior to the design, construction or installation of an appropriate sub structure. Assuming original wind and environmental design has been successfully completed this section is aimed at substructure design only.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

Describe both the need for and methods of in depth site and soil investigations
Discuss how the various environmental conditions, soil conditions and loadings of the turbine will determine the size and type of foundation required
Demonstrate an understanding of the use and limitations of the various types of foundations used for offshore installations

Skills

Describe the various techniques available in the compilation of a comprehensive site report
Interpret and convert arising test results in the design and construction of the sub structures for various turbine designs
Appreciate the limitations of various sub structures in differing locations
Appreciate the scouring effect in tidal waters and the methods adopted to reduce their effects

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of wind turbine technology

Assessment Method

Verbal and/or written questioning relating to a given scenario, evidence to be stored within a portfolio
